In these times of great stress, be it in our personal or professional lives, often times, we look at life as a burden and may harbour thoughts of ending it. We fail to understand why we have compassion for others when we ourselves find none and we wonder why we go on and on, when it would seem better to die. Remember, life is for living and not for carrying a baggage of negative thoughts. Reflections on life must aid our happiness.
A Sanskrit shloka tells us “sukhani chittani visramya santi, sancharayanti api pathyanataraaṇi. tathaapi durvighyamapi vaasarjya, sukhaani vikaaraani chiram vimunchati” Happiness resides within the mind and can travel freely, overcoming physical limitations. It suggests that by letting go of the complexities and difficulties that burden the mind, true happiness can be experienced and expressed in various forms. So, how must our journey be?
It must explore the self and the world around us. Such a journey is a continuous process of growth, learning, and evolution. It introduces us to different people who influence and impact us, from family and friends to acquaintances and strangers. Like any journey, it comes with its share of surprises, challenges, and unexpected events. The sheer unpredictability makes living interesting. No matter how much we plan, there will always be elements beyond our control that can shape our experiences. We face challenges and obstacles that test our resilience and determination. Learning to adapt, to changing circumstances, to new situations and challenges is the key. Discovering our passions, interests, and purpose as we traverse various experiences will be the steps to follow. In the process of living, though we set personal goals and aspirations in life, whether related to career, relationships, or personal growth, it is essential to savour the moments and appreciate the beauty and richness of each experience.
The world is changing around us. That change stresses our lives in very unexpected ways. Embracing change and being open to new possibilities can lead to meaningful experiences. Time is the most valuable resource in adapting to the change. Mistakes and failures are opportunities for growth and learning. We need to embrace them as stepping stones on our path to a more fulfilling life.
There are a million things to complain about and wallow in self-pity. We may have a host of reasons to hate somebody or something, but should we carry that baggage for the rest of life? Life is short and living it full is the key. Love yourself to love others. Self-love is the foundation of all other forms of love. It is a powerful force that knows no boundaries. It can heal wounds, mend broken hearts, and bring light into the darkest places. It is a choice and a commitment. True love requires effort, understanding, and compassion. That also is the key to happiness.
Remember, there is nothing that we possess. Even love is not possessive. It allows freedom and encourages growth. letting go is sometimes an act of love in itself. Hence express love and appreciation to those you care about regularly. Life is uncertain, and we may not always have the chance to say what’s in our hearts. Expressing when due, leads to happiness. However, it is not a constant state but rather a collection of fleeting moments. Only when we learn to savour and appreciate these moments will we be happy. Material possessions and external achievements may bring temporary happiness, but true and lasting happiness often comes from within and that needs gratitude. We must focus on what we have rather than what we lack. Surrounding ourselves with positive and supportive people will uplift and inspire us. Pursuing our passions and doing things that bring us joy are the things to do.
These reflections are not definitive truths, but rather perspectives to ponder and integrate into our lives. Everyone’s journey is unique, and the meanings of life, love, and happiness may evolve with time and personal experiences. However, we must embrace the quest for understanding and fulfilment. That alone will lead us to a life filled with love, purpose, and joy. We must learn to cherish the present moment, for it is all we have. Dwelling in the past or worrying about the future only takes away from the beauty of now. Our happiness matters.
